ISO 10816-3 Vibration Severity Standards
Monitoring root-mean-square (RMS) vibration velocity (mm/s) on the spindle housing is the most reliable predictor of machine reliability.
Vibration Severity Zones (18,000 – 24,000 RPM)
- Zone A (< 0.71 mm/s RMS): Pristine new condition. Sub-micron concentricity.
- Zone B (0.71 – 1.80 mm/s RMS): Good operating condition suitable for unrestricted long-term production.
- Zone C (1.80 – 4.50 mm/s RMS): Unsatisfactory. Significant bearing degradation or collet unbalance.
- Zone D (> 4.50 mm/s RMS): Danger of catastrophic spindle seizure. Shut down machine immediately.
