Helical Thread Milling on CNC Routers: Internal & External Threads
Thread milling eliminates broken taps and allows threading of large diameters, blind holes, and non-ferrous metals on standard 3-axis CNC router tables.
Why Thread Milling Beats Tapping on CNC Routers
Traditional taps require high-torque low-RPM spindles with rigid tapping sync. If a tap binds in aluminum or brass, it breaks inside the part, often scrapping expensive custom work.
The Thread Milling Process
A single-point or multi-form carbide thread mill rotates at high spindle speeds (12,000 – 18,000 RPM) while the machine executes a 3-axis helical circular interpolation (circling in X/Y while pitching 1 thread pitch in Z).
- One Tool for Multiple Diameters: A single 60° thread mill can cut M6, M8, M10, and 1/4"-20 internal and external threads simply by changing the CAM circular radius.
Remember that the CNC tooling industry is competitive, so standing out with high-quality products, excellent customer service, and innovation will be key to your success. If you’re looking for specific advice or information on certain aspects of manufacturing CNC router tools, feel free to ask!
