Calculating Chip Load and Spindle RPM: The Master Formula for CNC Routers
Stop guessing your feed rates. Use standard mathematical formulas for chip load, surface feet per minute, and feed rate to eliminate tool burning and premature dulling.
The Physics of CNC Chip Formation
A common misconception among beginner machinists is that running the spindle at maximum RPM (e.g. 24,000 RPM) while moving slowly is safer. In reality, slow feed rates at high RPM cause rubbing rather than cutting, creating extreme localized friction that destroys carbide cutting edges in minutes.
The Fundamental Formulas
Chip Load (CL) = (Feed Rate (IPM)) ÷ (RPM × Number of Flutes)
Feed Rate (IPM) = RPM × Flutes × Chip Load
Feed Rate (mm/min) = IPM × 25.4
Target Chip Load Reference Table (Solid Carbide)
- Hardwood (Oak, Maple): 0.003" – 0.006" (0.076mm – 0.152mm)
- Softwood (Pine, Cedar): 0.005" – 0.010" (0.127mm – 0.254mm)
- MDF & Plywood: 0.004" – 0.008" (0.102mm – 0.203mm)
- Aluminum 6061: 0.001" – 0.003" (0.025mm – 0.076mm)
