Why Straight Plunging Destroys End Mills
Most solid carbide end mills have limited center-cutting relief. When you plunge straight down (Z-axis), the center of the tool has zero cutting speed (0 SFM), forcing the carbide to crush and smear the material rather than cut it.
Recommended Entry Strategies
- Linear Ramping: Advance along X or Y while descending at a 2° to 4° slope in metals, or 5° to 10° slope in woods and plastics.
- Helical Spiral Entry: Circle downward in a spiral with a diameter equal to 1.5x to 1.8x the tool diameter.
Remember that the CNC tooling industry is competitive, so standing out with high-quality products, excellent customer service, and innovation will be key to your success. If you’re looking for specific advice or information on certain aspects of manufacturing CNC router tools, feel free to ask!
