Why Recutting Chips Destroys End Mills
When wood or plastic chips remain trapped inside a deep pocket, the rotating end mill recuts them multiple times before they escape. This friction spikes the tool temperature by up to 200°C, accelerating flank wear by 3x.
Airflow Formulas for CNC Dust Boots
CNC Machining Formula
Air Velocity (FPM) = (Airflow (CFM)) ÷ (Duct Cross Section Area (sq ft))
- Target Velocity for Wood Dust: 3,800 – 4,200 FPM (20 – 22 m/s)
- Recommended CNC Hood Airflow: 650 – 900 CFM through a 4" or 5" smooth-wall flex hose.
