CNC Spoilboard Surfacing: Flycutter Feeds, Speeds & Flattening Protocols
A perfectly trued MDF spoilboard is essential for precision depth control and vacuum clamping efficiency. Learn how to surface your bed with insert spoilboard cutters.
Why Spoilboard Surfacing Matters
Atmospheric humidity causes MDF and LDF vacuum spoilboards to swell and warp unevenly across a 4x8 or 5x10 sheet. Surfacing removes the moisture-swollen top skin and ensures the table is parallel to the spindle within ±0.05mm.
Stepover & Speed Guidelines for 2" to 3" Flycutters
| Cutter Diameter | Recommended RPM | Feed Rate | Stepover (65%) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | 1.5" (38mm) | 16,000 – 18,000 | 4,000 mm/min | 25mm | | 2.0" (50mm) | 14,000 – 16,000 | 5,500 mm/min | 32mm | | 3.0" (75mm) | 10,000 – 12,000 | 6,500 mm/min | 48mm |
[!TIP] If you notice ridges or stepped lines after surfacing, your spindle is not perpendicular (out of tram). Tram your spindle along X and Y axes using dual dial indicators before the final skim pass.
Remember that the CNC tooling industry is competitive, so standing out with high-quality products, excellent customer service, and innovation will be key to your success. If you’re looking for specific advice or information on certain aspects of manufacturing CNC router tools, feel free to ask!
