Identifying Wear Types Under 50x Magnification
Waiting until an end mill breaks or makes a loud squealing noise is costly. Inspecting cutters under a 50x USB shop microscope reveals predictable wear patterns.
Wear Metrics & Action Thresholds
- Uniform Flank Wear (VB < 0.15mm): Normal operating wear. The tool can be professionally reground and recoated up to 3 times.
- Flank Wear (VB > 0.30mm): Tool is dull. Friction spikes dramatically, generating excessive heat and spindle load.
- Micro-Chipping on Cutting Edge: Caused by harmonic chatter or runout. Increase feed per tooth or reduce tool stickout.
